Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your prelim task what do you feel have learnt in the progression form it to the full product?

During the time when we were doing or preliminary, we were I was already confident I using the equipment because we had practiced in class. I was able to use my skills and help contribute doing the prelim task.

Pre-production is the process in which you prepare all the elements needed in a film. For our thriller opening we had storyboarded our idea with comments such as what kinds of props we will need , where to position the camera and what type of camera shots we are going to use, we had to also plan the type of audience we would target our thriller. This is an advantage because for our thriller opening as it is a guide for us to follow and amend anything. We would amend anything during the production of our thriller. Adding to that we had to make sure that the location we were going to film in was available for us. We had to also plan what props to buy for filming our thriller because we did not want anything to go wrong. While we were doing our preliminary we had to make sure the prelim opening did not look like a trailer, we had to make it into a storyline. Or else there would be no point of calling it an opening to a thriller.

Throughout this process, I believe we obtained valuable planning and organization skills, which proved to be very helpful to end our thriller opening, (TWELVE). Due to the fact we had limited time for the prelim the sketches were drawn roughly whereas our actual thriller opening storyboard, we had time and we properly thought and organized what shots/angles and what the character was going to do. We were very organized in planning what time we were going to get to the location of film and to when and we were going to edit our thriller.

In the production of a film the film is created and filmed. Throughout the production of our film, we tried to keep to the storyboard as much as possible, this is because it would be less complex as it was our first idea and making changes would affect the whole opening. Whilst the production of our film, as a group I had found it comfortable to film as we had worked together to use the camera. Also, sharing the role meant that we all had input into the production of the thriller. We were all able to put forward the skills we had learnt and developed from our preliminary task.

Finally, post production is where the film is pull together to have stability so that it is presentable to audiences. In post production for our thriller, we had used a software Final Cut Pro to edit our clips. On this software, we had also used it to add transitions such as fade in and fade out, we used another software called live type to and add titles of the cast, director, producer and the name of our thriller, this was to follow the conventions of thriller openings. After editing our clips together, we had imported it into Soundtrack Pro so that we could add music to our opening. We had searched for sounds on this software which would be suitable to use for our opening. Furthermore, we had used Foley sounds to highlight the use of some of the props in our thriller opening. For example, we had used the diegetic sound of the book closing to emphasise the fact that our actor was in frustration that all the chanting was not working.

Overall, during both the productions of the preliminary task and our final film I have been able to increase my knowledge on using all the equipment. It has also helped me in becoming more familiar with the software we had used in the production of our thriller. One of the problem was matching shots together so that it would make sense to the audience. However, we did overcome this problem by re-filming some shots so that we could then use them in our opening. The overall thriller opening was superb.

EVALUATION; question seven.

My group and I had our first taster of production and planning of a thriller opening when we made our preliminary film. We didn't have a lot of time and only had limited use of sources. During the preliminary film, we had acquired a lot of skills, which we had learnt on the day or had knowledge of from when we were first introduced to the equipment in class.

In the pre production of filming our preliminary film we had to plan what the thriller was actually about and the storyboarding; whilst planning our preliminary, we had to consider who our target audience were so we can make the film suited to our ideal audience. We also had to make a storyline that to the preliminary and had to make sure the prelim opening did not look like a trailer, otherwise we have failed our purpose of an thriller opening. We then had to make a storyboard which would be very useful as we were able to know what we would film, in what order and how we would edit it. The storyboard also allowed us to put all our ideas on paper and see whether they were achievable or not. It also gave us a sense of how we would like each shot and where each shot would be placed in the sequence. During this process, I believe we acquired good drawing, planning and organisation skills, which proved to be very beneficial to our end media product, TWELVE. Due to the fact we had limited time for the prelim the sketches were drawn roughly whereas our actual thriller opening storyboard, we had time and we properly thought and organised what shots/angles and what the character was going to do. We were extremely organised in planning from, what time we were going to get to the location of filming to how/when we were going to edit our film.

Our camera skills were praised by my media teacher and others; it was my first time using the camera as I was not present during the tutorial of equipment. As a group, we thought of different angles and shots we can use for our prelim. The different angles of each character puts the audiences attention just to that character, which I thought would be very effective for the prelim and our future thriller opening. One of the things my group were praised for in camera skills in our prelim was the panning technique; we showed the panning technique in our thriller opening and it turned out that most people liked it as it was very effective and added more tension.

We used some props in our prelim; we used an envelope, as the title was called 'The Letter'; we also used a chair, to show authority and status. We did not use a lot as we didn't have time to get a lot of props and we hardly needed any props which suited our prelim. However, during the planning of our thriller opening we thoroughly thought of everything; including the mise en scene. We bought some candles and got some from home so it would set the eerie mood of the supernatural being. We planned for the male victim to wear white so it represents innocence and wealth, and for the female supernatural being to wear black clothes and make-up to symbolise death and horror. We needed a charm-like book for the character to read. I searched in libraries and shops to look for a old-looking book. I did not find any so at last minute I got a book from which happened to be a Harry Potter book. It was dark and a fairly suitable size - it proved to work well in the end, as it looked effective and most people noticed it.

As we filmed in daylight for our prelim, we hardly needed any lighting equipment. However, I would say that if we did film in darkness for prelim, it would be effective and add tension to the whole prelim. In contrast, in Twelve, lighting had a lot more input in it; we had the candles obviously which a gave luminous glow on the character, which added suspense and proved to be effective. We also used artificial lighting underneath one of the characters to add suspense and makes the character look even more scary.

After we had filmed everything, we had to move on to the editing. We all played a part in the prelim editing as well as the thriller opening. During the editing of the prelim, that is when we were learning how to use Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro, and in my opinion, I think we were exceptional for beginners. The shots we had to make were; match cuts, jump cuts, long shots, close ups, establishing shots, wide shot, 180 degree rule, etc. We used all these in our prelim and thriller opening, to make sure we had a range of shots that we could use to make the film more effective. I think we applied these really well and showed them best to our ability. The editing was a bit difficult as there were twice as many clips to put together and title sequence. The title sequence was a bit of a bother as we were unsure of what to use and how to use it. In the end, we used the same narrative opening sequence in our thriller opening as the prelim. We used some video transitions to make the clips flow more smoothly and so it does not cut the attention of the audience. We used a slow motion technique to show the emotion of the character when he sees the supernatural being. In my opinion, the sound we used in the prelim was better than the sound in the thriller opening. They were more on point and the music added more tension and suspense. The sound in the thriller opening seemed slightly dead and the music did not gradually go louder when something dramatic happened, like I wanted it to. One thing I was proud of was the foley sounds for both of them; in the prelim, we used foley sound for the doors opening, the chair spinning, the hand banging on the table and foot steps; in the thriller opening, we used foley sounds for the blow of a match and candles, the slamming of the book and the scratching of the match stick against the match case.

Overall I have learnt a lot of skills from pre production, production and post production which I am confident on expressing and using independently. The thing in which I was most confident on is using the camera, as I had a steady hand and the ideas were quite effective when shown in film. The skills in which I acquired during my media course and the prelim helped me in producing a near professional thriller opening.

Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full product?

During my preliminary task, I was confident using the equipment to film as I was familiar with the equipment we were using. So when it came to filming our thriller opening, I was able to use the skills that I had developed when doing the preliminary task making it easier to use whilst filming our thriller opening.

Pre-production is the process in which you prepare all the elements needed in a film, play or performance. For our thriller opening we had storyboarded our initial idea with comments such as if props were required in the shot and where the shot will be taken place and what show will be used. This was beneficial for our thriller opening as it set out a guideline which we intended to follow and if any changes were to be made, they would be done during the production of our thriller opening. In addition, we had ensured that the locations we were going to use were available for the dates that we had scheduled to film and that all props were bought so that filming would go smoothly.

In production, the film is created and shot. During the production of our film, we had decided to try and keep to the storyboard as much as possible. This was because it would be less complicated as it was our initial idea and making changes would affect the whole opening.  Whilst the production of our film, as a group I had found it comfortable to film as we had worked together to use the camera. Also, sharing the role meant that we all had input into the production of the thriller. We were all able to put forward the skills we had learnt and developed from our preliminary task.

Finally, post production is where the film is assembled to have continuity so that it is presentable to audiences. In post production for our thriller, we had used FinalCut Pro to edit our clips together. On this software, we had also used it to add transitions such as fade out/fade in and add titles to our opening to follow the conventions of thriller openings. After editing our clips together, we had imported it into Soundtrack Pro so that we could add a soundtrack/music to our opening. We had searched for sounds on this software which would be appropriate and suitable to use for our opening. Furthermore, we had used foley sounds to emphasise the use of some of the props in our thriller opening. For example, we had used the diegetic sound of the book closing to emphasise the fact that our protagonist was fed up with chanting and had given up on trying.

Overall, throughout both the productions of the preliminary task and our final film  I have been able to expand my knowledge on using the equipment. Also, it has assisted me in becoming more familiar with the software that we had used in post production. One of the difficulties that I had come across was matching shots together so that it would make sense to the audience and have continuity effect. However, we were able to overcome this problem by re-filming some shots so that we could then use them in our opening. In addition, I am pleased with our final product as it has come out the way we had wished for it to be.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Due to the fact that our thriller film opening is a supernatural thriller,  as a group we had decided that the younger audience will be ideal for this type of movie, as most thrillers are directed for a younger audience. What I mean by younger audience are people aged from 16 to 25, this is because this is the ideal age group for thriller films.
The fact that our thriller is a supernatural thriller, it will attract people who are deeply into believing in supernatural beings.

Based on our unique selling point the specific audience for our thriller are rated  15A and above, the thriller film Orphan is rated 15A and The Black Swan is rated 12A, so therefore we decided 15 A would be appropriate for our thriller opening. We had also decided that both male and female will be appropriate as an audience as we had a contrast of streotypical victim, which was a male.

We had some feed back for our thriller.

Evaluation Question 5

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

A target audience is a specific group of people within the target market at which a product or message is aimed at, in this case it is the different genre of films.

In our pitch, this is what we had decided to use for our target audience. We had decided to use teenagers from the age of 15 as we would be able to relate to what they may wish to see in a thriller. Also, this is the age certificate for other thrillers. Below are examples or some thrillers that have a similar target audience to our thriller

Evaluation Question 1

An opening sequence in a film usually consists of the names of the film, cast, director, producers and the production companies. These are usually shown through various graphics according to the type of film it is.
Also, there is some sort of action used at the beginning to hold the attention of the audience. This would help in keeping the attention of the audience as they would be curious as to why a certain incident has taken   place.Another key convention is music/soundtrack, the opening of thriller movies usually have a non-diegetic sound playing which helps to build up to the introduction of our characters and the location/setting that they are in. The introduction of characters and settings are usually presented in all films, this is also another convention of film openings.

Our thriller had followed these conventions as we had added titles to our sequence showing the thriller's name and certain cast and crew members. Also, we had shown some action by having a ghost appear whilst our main protagonist is chanting from a book. This would help to keep our audience interested as they may be intrigued as to what happens next. The sound used in our opening was not loud and fast paced, it was slightly eerie so that the audience watching would be attracted as to where the music used will lead them. I think this was useful as it helped to set a mood for the thriller. In addition, we had used some diegetic sounds to emphasise the use of some props, such as the book closing and the matchstick and candles being blown out.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Due to the fact that our media product a thriller film opening is a supernatural thriller, my group and I have decided that the younger audience will be ideal for thistype of movie, as most thrillers are directed at the younger audience.

What do you mean by an younger audience? and Why?
The younger audience age ranges from 16 to 35 years old. This is because they are more likely to be thrill seekers, and from our research, when they go watch a movie, it is more likely to be thriller due to the adrenaline they get and the action.

Your thriller is a supernatural; what kind of audience will that attract?

The fact that the movie is supernatural I think it would attract people who are more than thrill seekers. it is for people who believe in supernatural beings and spirits.

Based on its unique selling point, describe the specific audience for your film?

The film is rated 15 and above seeing as the filmsThe Woman in Black is rated a 12A and Orphan is 15. All these films are similar to our one, so we decided that 15 was suitable. We decided that both genders will be appropriate as we had a contrast of stereotypical victims in usual thrillers; we had a male.

Evaluation Question 1

Our thriller, which is of a supernatural genre, uses many of the conventions which would usually be used  in professional thriller film openings. We were inspired by thrillers such as, The Grudge, Paranormal activity, The Exorcist and many more.

In the pictures of our thriller opening TWELVE, and in The Grudge, both the titles and the cast names share a similar level of formality. We chose to use to use this convention of a plain font because we believe it is effective in raising an intent atmosphere when watching the opening. Also the conventional fades of the font keeps the pace slow.

Although the music is not heard by just by looking at the pictures, the musics is non-diegetic. For The Grudge, the music is at first non- diegetic, but then goes on to being diegetic, such as the women
breathing. However for our thriller Twelve the music is non- diegetic all the way through, but in one part towards the end of the opening we used diegetic sound of the protagonist shutting the book, due to frustration.
Women breathing

The charm book

Both title sequence use non-diegetic music, which is conventional. They both create suspense and gives an eeri feeling, this is conventional in thriller films, this helps to also add suspense.

Our thriller Twelve and The grudge use a key prop or an conventional icon. Twelve uses the time on the phone, this is our main prop because it reveals the time it was set at and the title of the thriller.  The grudge uses a diary or a book. We also used the time on the phone because we believe that it contributed to building up the suspense.

There are many elements of intertextuality we have used, such as the bathroom scene from Psycho, the mirror from the supernatural thriller Mirror, the stairs from The grudge and The exorcist. Overal We have used  all the main conventions of a thriller film opening such as the name of the cast, director, producer and production company.

Evaluation - Question 1

Q. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product- a thriller opening- uses the key elements of a conventions of other more professional and experienced media products. We gained ideas  from a range of films which fall in the category of  supernatural and action, for example; The Grudge, Paranormal activity and Orphan.

The basic elements in a film openings include?

There are many components for a film opening, one of the main and most of the time first portrayed  elements is the production company. Soon after the next element which follow after are cast members and director names ect. the name of the film and the production/distribution company are both very effective to show the audience what the film is called. We showed these conventions by following different types of film openings such as Psycho And grudge.

Here are some of the similarities between our film opening and other thrillers:

                                          The Street

The Stairs

Bathroom

Scary Girl

within our film there were many different elements where we took from other thrillers to put in to ours. overall the use of intertextuality came out quite well as we managed to use some of the scenes very effectively in our opening of a thriller.
